Archaeological Evaluation (16 November 2009 - 27 November 2009)
NJ 20856 64341 A programme of archaeological works was undertaken 16–27 November 2009 prior to development. A dovecot (NJ 2072 6442) was identified during a desk-based assessment and cartographic sources suggested the site had remained as either open or cultivated land from at least the period of Roy’s survey (1747–55).
A total of 231 trenches were excavated covering just over 7% (16,616m2) of the proposed development area. Four trenches contained archaeological features: Trenches 68, 70 and 72 contained a shallow linear ditch running along the same alignment as the current field boundary, suggesting this feature was an older field boundary. Trench 138 contained an isolated pit of unknown function. No finds were recovered from either feature and no traces of the dovecot were located.
