Place of discovery: NO c 209 101

Present location: set against the wall outside the gate into Strathmiglo graveyard.

Evidence for discovery: recognised in 1969 re-used as a gate post near Westmill and moved to Strathmiglo sometime before the end of 1978.

Present condition: weathered and damaged, especially along the edges of the stone.

Description

Incised towards the top of a tapering pillar of stone are two Pictish symbols: a disc and elongated notched rectangle above a deer’s head. The deer has a large oval eye and spirals at the base of the neck.

Date: seventh century.

Archaeology Notes

NO21SW 21 2167 1022 was at 209 101.

NO 209 101: Two Pictish symbols, 'tuning-fork' and hind's head, have been discovered by Mr J Duncan, Edinburgh, on a 7' high pillar stone, later re-used as a gatepost, now fallen. It is hoped that it will be re-erected locally.

Field Visit (11 December 1978)

NO 2167 1022. The symbol stone has been erected outside the churchyard wall at Strathmiglo. It measures 0.5m by 0.4m by 1.7m high, and although very weathered, the markings are easily discerned.

Surveyed at 1:2500.
