Architecture Notes

NS66SW 1003 56182 61883

Only the island platform under the road overbridge carrying Queen Street over the main line to Glasgow Central, survives of a station on the W curve of the triangular junction at Rutherglen. The platform is visible on oblique aerial views (RCAHMSAP 2009). The station opened in 1865 and closed in the 1960's.

The 2nd and Revision Editions of the OS 25-inch map (Lanarkshire), depict the station at the fullest extent. Built by the Caledonian Railway Company (CR) with at least ten platform faces, four of which are terminal, are shown on the maps under the overbridge carrying Queen Street over the railway. The entrance to the station was from the overbridge. A footbridge once connected this station to that on the E curve (NS66SW 505).
