Project (1997)
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
Field Visit (7 November 2001)
Two open-work steel screens flank a stone pillar with a dolphin lamp on top and a portrait bust of John Hunter (EDIN0405) in front. Each screen has a central vertical 'spine' which allows the screen to rotate. Horizontal curves of metal fan out from the central spindle and are crossed vertically by rods curving away from the centre. The tapered top of each spindle is crossed by three downward-curving horizontals. Below the lowest curve, and along the bottom of each screen, are a series of vertical zigzags, like drawn waves.
The design recalls ships' masts, the backbone of a whale, fishing nets hung up to dry, and the buttons on a captain's uniform. The zigzags suggest water reflections. (1)
