Project (1997)
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
Field Visit (24 April 2002)
Entrance to Swanfield Industrial Estate is marked by a group of 3 swans (white, black), on poles of differing heights, in paved area at end of a brick building on the right hand side. Forming a curve around these are 4 bollards, c.3ft high, of
abstracted wheat sheaves. According to the artist there were originally about 14
of these bollards going around the curve but they got knocked down by lorries.
On the left-hand side of the road is a single high pole with a swan in flight, surrounded by bollards marking N, S, E and W. This swan functions as a weathervane.
Nearby is the old metal over-gate sign of the original (old) entrance on Bonnington Road [see no. ] and a related gable-end mural, also by David Wilkinson (1984).
Beneath the old swan sign is a life-size concrete wheatsheaf [EDIN0458], now rather battered, with a horseshoe, spanner and cogs on top of the wheat. These refer to horses and machinery, as this was the original entrance to the stable of the flour mill, all now demolished.
