Orignally a small group of houses around the terminal of the ferry to North Connel. The village expanded in the late 19th Century following the building of the Callander to Oban railway with many large houses being built around the station. After 1903 the village expanded further following the opening of the Connel Ferry Bridge and the station becoming a junction for the Ballachulish branch railway. The railway to Ballachulish closed in 1966.
The ferry point is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1875, sheet lxxxvii) and the subsequent expansion is recorded on the 2nd Edition of the OS 6-inch maps with the omission of the preifx 'South'.
