The farmhouse and farmstead at Salum is situated at the NE end of the machair at Traigh Shathalum.

The house stands on the site of an earlier township (NM04NE 24), which is depicted as unroofed on the 1st Edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire, Island of Tiree etc 1882, sheet lxv).
