Architecture Notes

NT27NW 590 20343 76336

Two WW II loopholes are set into the N wall of the policies (gardens) of Lauriston Castle (NT27NW 1). Situated at the E end of the stone built wall are two concrete loopholes both with the wider inner opening.

They possibly formed part of the Blue Line of the defences of Edinburgh manned by No.1 Battalion. Other loopholed walls in the area are found at Quality Street (NT27NW 52) and House O'Hill Road (NT27NW 589) and two in Gamekeepers Road (NT17NE 228 and 229) with one of the former having been demolished.
