Watching Brief (2 April 2014 - 29 August 2014)

NT 2260 4000 Due to the proximity of known prehistoric sites, including the site of an Iron Age hillfort, an archaeological watching brief was undertaken between April 2012 and August 2014 by GUARD Archaeology Ltd during the extension of Edston Quarry. The majority of features encountered across the site were related to earlier quarrying activity. Five quarry pits, probably associated with the construction of the dry stone dyke forming the present eastern extent of the development, were recorded towards the northern end of the site. These manifested themselves in the form of small, sub-rectangular or sub-oval, shallow, steep sided pits and were found cut into areas of outcropping weathered whinstone bedrock. The ephemeral remains of a path from the southernmost borrow pit was recorded aligned eastwards across the site towards the dry stone dyke. A further three smaller pits with charcoal rich fills were also recorded in the north western corner of the quarry extension site.

Watching Brief (7 February 2022 - 21 February 2022)

NT 22640 39853 Rathmell Archaeology Limited was appointed by Tillicoultry Quarries to undertake the archaeological monitoring in support of phase 1 of the quarry extension within Edston Quarry, Peebles, Scottish Borders. The monitoring did not identify any significant archaeological features or artefacts and no further works are recommended in the phase 1 area.
