Archaeology Notes

NM93SW 45.01 from c.91601 34027 to c.91970 33727

A group of railway sidings have been identified from vertical air photographs taken in 1947 (CPE/Scot/UK 247, frames 4028-4029, flown 31 July 1947), running for about 484m SE from the S boundary of the station. Only two sidings with rails in situ are visible on the air photographs.

It is believed that the sidings were constructed during World War II (information via e-mail to RCAHMS from M Briscoe, 9 July 2009). Part of the area occupied by the sidings in 1947 has now been built on by the modern Achaleven Cottages. The sidings were removed shortly after the photographs were taken.

At a later date further sidings were built to provide rail access to a small oil depot.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), July 2009.
