Architecture Notes

NS53NW 8.05 c. 50629 37840

A sundial was formerly at this location (first edition OS map).

Two sundials have been associated with Loudoun Castle:

1. A slate Equatorial sundial, dated 1634, was made by John Bonar of Ayr for Loudoun Castle. It was said to have been in the rose garden, but its current whereabouts are unknown.

2. A stone lectern sundial was found in 1985 'lying on a pile of stones from the ruined castle'. It was removed to Cheshire for restoration (MS 5741/4/7/1 and MS5741/4/7/2).

Information from Anne Cassells, 25 June 2009.
