Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (23 June 2008 - 26 June 2008)

NH 68900 42800 An evaluation was undertaken, 23-26 June 2008, along the route of proposed road. A total of 20 trenches were excavated across three fields, separated by two small streams. The trenching identified an isolated pit with a charcoal rich fill, a single posthole of modern date, and a cast-iron pipe running through two of the trenches. No other features of archaeological significance were identified.

Archaeological Evaluation (17 February 2009 - 26 February 2009)

NH 689 428 An evaluation was conducted, 17–26 February 2009, in advance of a housing development. A total of 65 trenches were excavated within five land parcels. A stone-lined culvert, two pits and a cast-iron pipe, all thought to be of recent date, were recorded. No significant archaeological features or deposits were encountered.

The evaluated area is close to known prehistoric sites and in a location superficially suitable for prehistoric settlement. However, topsoil across the area was thin and covered very stony glacial deposits. These two factors may have made the area less attractive for early settlement in comparison to the surroundings areas. All the recovered evidence indicated agricultural use in the modern period.

Archaeological Evaluation (18 February 2010 - 19 February 2010)

NH 68889 43318 An evaluation consisting of six trenches was undertaken 18–19 February 2010 prior to the excavation of a pond. The site was located to the W of the area evaluated in 2008 (DES 2008, 107) which identified a single isolated pit. No archaeological finds or features were recorded.
