The line was opened in February 1894, double track with nine bridges (six stone, three metal) and two stations Barnton (terminus). The intermediate station, Davidson's Mains (originally Barnton Gate, renamed 1903), had two platforms. The main buildings sat on the Edinburgh-bound side, with a waiting room on the other side and a foot bridge connecting.

D Evans, 1984.
