Archaeology Notes

NO19SE 2 1530 9216.

(NO 1530 9216) Site of St. Andrews Chapel (NR).

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1903)

A church, called the White Kirk, is supposed to have been erected in the 8th. and 9th. centuries by the monks of St. Andrews, no trace of which remains. In the reign of David I a new church was built near the green knoll close to the castle. Its revenues were paid to St. Andrews until 1230 when they were granted to St. Mary of Monymusk and so continued to the Reformation.

S Erskine 1898.

No further information. A church was extant in 1807. (Information from Estate map held at Invercauld Ho.)

Visited by OS (N K B) 26 October 1967.

NO 153 921. A desk-based study and archaeological field evaluation were commissioned in advance of a proposed extension of the cemetery at Braemar. The existing cemetery is thought to be the site of the medieval chapel of St Andrew. On the higher ground to the S of the site the grass-covered footings of a possible deserted medieval settlement (NMRS NO19SE 17) have been observed from the air. It was thought that remains associated with either of these sites may have been present in the proposed cemetery extension area. No features of archaeological interest were identified during the evaluation.

NO 153 921 As noted above the report records following examination of maps and photographs of the area and a trial excavation using four trenches it was established that there is no archaeological evidence within the boundaries of the planned extension to the cemetery. No further action is recommended.
