Archaeology Notes

c.3845 2539

A possible WW II installation has been identified from large scale vertical air photographs (106G/UK 986, frames 4200-4201, flown 9 NOvember 1945), in a field about 270m SE of Sandyford farmstead.

Visible on the photographs is a circular tower with a conical roof set within a square fenced enclosure with what may be a hut at the NW edge.

The feature, which remains as an unidentified site, is similar to those that have been noted at Whinhill in Renfrewshire (NS27SE 126) and Alderston, East Lothian (NT47NE 190).

It has been suggested (Mr I Borwn, Radar Archive), that the tower may be a DF site.
