Architecture Notes

In 1876 the Community of St Mary and St John acquired the property at 147 Hardgate as an orphanage. The house, which became known as the House of Bethany, was enlarged, and a chapel added. Although the orphanage closed in 1954, the House itself survived until closure in 1980.
