Archaeology Notes

NT36SE 147 3719 6026

A bank of at least eight clamp kilns is situated in a small valley on the N side of the Waverley Line at Borthwick Bank and N of Borthwick Mains farmsteading (NT36SE 84). Disturbed ground at the W end of the kilns would suggest the remains of further structures.

The clamp kilns are not depicted on the early editions of the OS 25-inch or 6-inch maps nor is any industrial activity shown at this location.

Project (April 2009 - February 2015)

The Borders Railway Project proposals are to reinstate the Newcraighall to Tweedbank section of the former Waverley Line. The reinstated railway line will be approximately 48km long and the majority of the route will use the existing railway embankment.

Several field surveys, archaeological evaluations and standing building surveys were undertaken by CFA Archaeology from April 2009 until February 2015.
