N58 0 W5 26

NLO: Tanera Mor [name centred NB 985 075]

Tanera Beg [name: NB 965 075]

Caolas a' Mhill Ghairbh [name centred NB 979 081]

Summer Isles [name centred NB 97 07]

Loch Broom [name centred NH 10 93].

(Classified as sloop: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as 1865). Elizabeth McKenzie: this vessel was lost in Tanera Sound.

Registration: Inverness. Built 1842. 23 tons burthern. Length: 10m. Beam: 4m.

(Location of loss cited as N58 0.5 W5 25.5).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative, Tanara Sound is probably to be equated with the Caolas a' Mhill Ghairbh, the sound between Tanera Mor (the largest island within the Summer Isles group) to the E and the smaller Tanera Beg to the W. The Summer Isles group of islands is situated within the N side of the broad entrance to Loch Broom.

It remains unclear whether this vessel stranded or foundered: the former appears the more probable.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 14 October 2008.
