Activities

Field Visit (9 September 1987)

This farmstead, comprising the remains of three buildings and an enclosure, stands on a terrace to the S of Dail Bhreac.

Building (A) has a central byre-drain. It is rectangular on plan (10.1m from NE to SW by 4.3m transversely over stone wall-footings 0.8m thick) and stands on the E side of an enclosure (23.4m by up to 5.6m internally) which extends further to the S.

At the SSW angle of the enclosure, and end-on to it, there is another building (B) (5.3m from NNE to SSW by 2.3m transversely over stone wall-footings 0.9m thick) with an entrance on its WSW side.

Building (C) (8m from WNW to ESE by 6m transversely over spread stone walls), the latest of the three buildings, was inserted towards the centre of the enclosure, effectively subdividing it. On the SE and detached from the enclosure there are the remains of a rectangular building (13.4m from NW to SE by 4.5m transversely over turf-covered stone wall-footings) with a yard attached to its SW side (7.5m by 10m internally).

On a spur some 120m to the W there is a further building (12.2m from N to S by 3m transversely overall), which overlies another measuring 9.7m from N to S by 4.4m transversely over stone wall-footings 1m in thickness.
