Archaeology Notes

NO17SW 4 11 70.

No evidence of a hospital at Spittal of Glenshee has been discovered. The earliest reference found is to the lands of "Spittale of Glensche" in 1542. The possibility that there was a chapel in Glenshee is suggested by the mention of the Chapel-crofts in 1615 and 1641.

It is generally believed locally that Spittal is a corruption of the Gaelic work meaning,'narrow pass between the hills,' and is not associated with a hospital. If this translation is correct the name Spittal fits the position perfectly. There is no evidence suggesting the existence of either a chapel or hospital on the site (see NO17SW 11).
