NLO: Inner Sound [name centred NG 64 40]

Scalpay [name centred NG 60 30]

Portree [name: NG 483 437]

Lochgilphead [name: NR 862 880].

Tobermory, 11th April. 'The KETTY, McDougall, of and for Lochgilohead [Lochgilphead], from Portree, foundered to the East of Scalp [Scalpay] 24th ult.: crew saved.'

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,321, London, Friday April 16 1847.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8151).

(Classified as wooden sloop: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as 24 March 1847). Kitty: this vessel foundered East of the Scalp [Scalpay], between Portree and Lochgilphead.

Registration: Lochgilphead. Built 1817. 24 tons burthern. Length: 12m. Beam: 3m.

(Location of loss cited as N57 10.0 W6 30.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially tentative, being derived from the vessel's route (as described by Whittaker) and the presence of Scalpaigh (Scalpay) island.

An alternative location within the area of the North Minch may be suggested. There are several islands with Scalpaigh or Scalpay place-names, including that centred at NG 23 95.

The classification cited by Whittaker remains unverified, but is accepted. The form of the vessel's name that is cited in the primary account is preferred.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 20 August 2008.
