A hutted military camp has been identified from vertical air photographs (196G/Scot/UK 94, frames 4130-4132, flown 15 May 1946), in area S of the Castle Toward (NS16NW 22.00).
Four distinct groups of huts are visible, at NS 11310 67789 are at least eighteen huts, NS 11459 67805, the largest group of about 28 huts, at NS 11857 67809 about ten huts and at NS 11376 68046, a small group of at least six huts. Most of the huts that are visible on the photographs are of the Nissen type along with several wooden buildings.
The camp would not appear to be connected with the Toward Battery about 1Km to the NE (NS16NW 16), as there is an accommodation camp attached to this installation, but may be related to the large number of traning establishments located in the Firth of Clyde estuary.
The bases of some of the huts appear in an oblique aerial colour slide taken in 1976.
Information from RCAHMS (DE), August 2008
The camp was probably linked to military training during World War II. Following overcrowding at Inverary Combined Operations camps the area of the camp was requisitioned byy the military for the 6th Armoured Division (Lavery 2004).
