NF19NW 8008 c. 10 98

N57 48 W8 34

NLO: St Kilda [name: NF 09 99]

Bagh a' Bhaile or Loch Hiort [name centred NF 102 988].

Possibly on map sheet NF09NE.

(No classification or date of loss specified). Unknown: a wreck in St Kilda Bay, snagged by anchor in April 1934.

(Location of loss cited as N57 48.0 W8 34.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. St Kilda Bay is not noted as such on the 1996 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the prominent indentation, which is widely known as Village Bay, and also as Bagh a' Bhaile or Loch Hiort. This is set into the SE side of Hirta or Hiort, the main island of the St Kilda group, and has presumably always seen the greatest use of any around the island, being the setting for St Kilda village.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 July 2008.
