Activities

Field Visit (1 October 1987)

NO16SW 47 1388 6381 to 1391 6382.

1. NO 1388 6381 Situated on a W-facing slope on a low rise some 570m NW of Lair cottage, there are the remains of a hut-circle measuring 9.4m in diameter within a stony bank which is well-defined on the W and measures up to 1.7m in thickness and 0.2m in height. On the E the inner edge of the wall is defined by a low scarp but the stony bank appears to partially ride up the slope behind the scarp on the N and S. The position of the entrance is not apparent under deep heather.

2. NO 1391 6382 Situated 21m ENE of (1) and partially levelled into a S-facing slope, there are the remains of a hut-circle measuring 11.7m in diameter within a wall reduced to a stony bank measuring up to 1.5m in thickness and 0.1m in height. The entrance is ill-defined but on the SSE.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 1 October 1987.

Magnetometry (16 December 2011 - 5 November 2012)

NO 1390 6370 A magnetic survey was carried out, 16 December 2011 – 5 November 2012, to provide a broad context for the excavations at Lair being conducted by Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust. The area has been occupied repeatedly, possibly from as early as the Neolithic. An area of c3ha has been covered so far but much of the site is in deep heather and progress is slow. A wide variety of magnetic features have been mapped.
