Archaeology Notes

NC46SW 8001 c. 427 603

N58 30.2 W4 42

NLO: Portnancon [name: NC 427 603].

(Classified as Motor Boat: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as 28 July 1923). Valid: this vessel caught fire, beached and burnt at Portnancon Bay, Loch Eriboll. Registration: Aberdeen.

(Location of loss cited as N58 30.0 W4 41.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Portnancon Bay is not noted as such on the 1997 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the small but distinct indentation into the WNW shore of Loch Eriboll immediately N of Portnancon Pier (NC46SW 5.01).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 27 June 2008.
