Archaeology Notes

NH77SE 8005 7760 7300

N57 43.82 W4 4.34

NLO: Sands of Nigg [name centred NH 770 716]

Nigg Bay [name centred NH 771 721]

Cromarty Firth [name centred NH 69 67].

Not to be confused with NH77SE 8001.

Formerly entered under classification Barge.

See also NH77SE 8001 and NH77SE 8012.

(Classified as Barge). A rectangular (3m by 1.5m by 0.6m) wood and metal structure at the High Water Mark. Plank built, two compartments.

(Location of loss clted as NH 7760 7300).

CFA/MORA Coastal Assessment Survey 1998.

Unknown. Target: what was it?

(Location cited as N57 43.45 W4 3.40).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The classification and location assigned to this record remain unverified. The vessel is presumably of comparatively recent date.

The Sands of Nigg occupy the extensive area of Nigg Bay, within the NE sector of the Cromarty Firth.

The cited location falls on the upper margin of the intertidal sands of Nigg Bay, 845m SE of Tarbat House (NH77SE 15.00).

Information from RCAHMS (SW, RJCM), 20 June 2008.

(Re-entered under classification Target Craft). The classification cited by Whittaker is accepted. Although it is rather small for the type, both the available description and the recorded location of this vessel are consistent with it having been a towed target craft used for surface gunnery practice by fleet units based in the Cromarty Firth. It most probably washed ashore in a storm after breaking from moorings.

The record entered as NH77SE 8012 may be a duplicate record for this vessel.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 12 April 2011.
