Archaeology Notes

NN01SW 3 018 146

NN 018 146 A programme of archaeological evaluation works was undertaken in July 2006 on the site of a proposed extension to the School at Dunning. Eight trenches were excavated. Trenches 1-3 recorded a linear ditch 2.7m wide and 1m deep cutting the natural drift geology 1m below the ground level. No datable finds were recovered from the fills of this ditch. A stone wall depicted on the 1901 Ordnance Survey was also recorded within these three trenches. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded in trenches 4-8. It is not known what the ditch feature represented although given the town's early origins it is possible that it could represent an early boundary ditch.

Excavation (2 July 2007 - 11 July 2007)

NN 0182 1455 A programme of archaeological works was required in advance of a proposed extension to the existing Dunning Primary School building. In total an area 30m E to W by 9–13m N to S was stripped by machine excavation between 2–11 July 2007. A ditch feature was encountered, aligned E/W and measuring 30m in length by up to 3.20m in width and 1.20m in depth. 75% of the feature was excavated, producing a flint arrowhead and blade. A second, contemporary ditch was identified aligned N to S, running into the feature. No other significant archaeological features or artefacts were encountered.

Archaeological Evaluation (2 July 2007 - 11 July 2007)

A programme of archaeological works was required by Perth and Kinross Council in advance of a proposed extension to the existing school building, by AOC Archaeology Group at Dunning Primary School, Dunning, Perthshire. In total an area 30 m east to west by between 9-13 m north to south was stripped by machine excavation. The ditch feature was aligned east to west and measured 30 m in length by up to 3.20 m in width and 1.20 m in depth. Seventy-five percent of the feature was excavated, producing a flint arrowhead and blade. A second, contemporary ditch was identified aligned north to south, running in to the feature. No other significant archaeological features or artefacts were encountered. OASIS: aocarcha1-28634

Project (17 June 2009 - 28 July 2009)

Watching briefs were kept between 17 June–28 July during the refurbishment of parts of the Forteviot-Dunning-Aberuthven 11kV overhead and underground power line.

Watching Brief (17 June 2009 - 28 July 2009)

NO 01774 14570 – NO 01664 14457 A watching brief was carried out during trenching for an underground cable on the S side of playing fields to the W of Dunning, close to the site of a putative early Christian ditch (DES 2007, 154). Glacial deposits were uncovered along most of the 160m long trench, although there were two stretches where it was not reached at a depth of 0.7m. While either of these sections might indicate the location of a ditch, they may simply represent undulations in the subsoil.
