Archaeology Notes

NT43NE 207 49892 35278

A loopholed wall situated in the stone wall of No.30 Abbotsford Road front garden.

Three loopholes cut into wall. Protecting the junction between Abbotsford Road and Tweed Road.

Information from Old Gala Club, 19 March 2008

The loopholed wall is situated about 16m NW of the entrance drive to No.30 Abbotsford Road.

Four rectangular loopholes could be seen, one each side of a lamppost, in a NE-facing low wall on the roadside of the garden of No.30 and a further two smaller loopholes at paement level to the SW.

Either side of the lamppost, the loophole to the SE measures about 50cm x 13cm whilst that to the NW is 33cm x 15cm. The loopholes are 70cm apart. Small elements of concrete were noted within each loophole. No trace of the 'third' loophole could be seen on the date of visit.
