Archaeology Notes

NS87SW 5.01 centred 82204 71017

Situated 100m SW of Well View cottage, the visible remains of this coal mine comprise a the remains of a crow's foot bing and other scattered colliery waste material heaps and a mineral railway which runs in from the S. A second spoil heap is situated about 156m NNW of the main complex.

The mine is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map as 'Meadowfield Pits No.6 and 7' with a bing and three roofed pithead buildings and two shafts (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet iii). The Revision Edition of 1913 (ibid) shows that by this date the colliery had been abandoned.
