Field Visit (22 June 1988)
NO16NE 22 1601 6867
This small island, which appears to be largely artificial, lies towards the centre of the loch about 100m from its S shore. It is roughly square on plan and formed almost entirely of boulders and small stones. On the date of visit, however, less than a third of the surface area was visible above water.
On the W the rubble shelves gently from the surface but on the ESE it pitches more steeply; a marked intake on this side may have served as a boat-landing. Towards the edge of the island there are fragmentary traces of what may be walls.
Pont (c.1600) depicts a mansion on the loch and annotates it 'Loch Sesatut, sumtyms ye dwelling of ye chief man of Glenshy and Strathardle', while Gordon (1636/1648) notes 'L. Sesatur old chief dwelling of Glens(hie)', by 1747 all knowledge of the island had clearly been lost.
Visited by RCAHMS (IMS) 22 June 1988.
