Metal Detector Survey (August 2007)
NS 8114 9238 A metal detector survey was undertaken during August 2007 on the site of a proposed business park development at Broadleys, Stirling. This followed a survey on a previous part of the development in 2006. The site is located on the west side of the Bannock Burn and is considered to lie within the general area of engagement during the main part of the Battle of Bannockburn. The survey produced a variety of metalwork,
none of it likely to relate to the Battle of Bannockburn. Three items might relate to post-medieval military activity, although none of the three identifications is definitive. The bulk of the metalwork related to modern activity on the site.

Archaeological Evaluation (24 April 2019 - 3 May 2019)
This report presents the results of an Archaeological Evaluation and Metal Detecting survey undertaken in advance of development for the proposed development at Millhall Road, Stirling (centred on NGR: NS 81154 92357). A total of 25 metal objects were recovered during the survey (Appendix 4). Most of the artefacts appeared to date to the 19th-20th century. The finds primarily consisted of ferrous objects, of which there were six horseshoes, likely related to the agricultural rig and furrow field system. In addition, modern moulded and machine tooled objects and a single brass button. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken which consisted of the excavation of 7 trenches and 200 hand dug test pits. This was done as per the WSI which required an 7% sample of the 1.3 ha development area. The evaluation revealed a rig and furrow field system cut by 20th field drains. The test-pitting revealed deposits and finds consistent with the late to post-medieval rig and furrow field system with fragments of green-glaze pottery as well as more modern white ceramics, nails and glass. A single prehistoric flint blade was found within the subsoil overlying the natural. A large ditch feature running WNW-ESE across the development area seems most likely to be a run-off ditch for the Kern Mill mill pond, suggested to be 18-19th century in date by cartographic evidence. Given the findings of the archaeological evaluation and the metal detecting survey, no further archaeological works are recommended.
