The Unversity Marine Biological Station was opened in 1897 and consists of a laboratory, museum and public aquarium. The institute has been managed by a partnership between the University of London and the University of Glasgow since 1970. The museum is named after David Robertson, a local Naturalist who was instrumental in the setting up of the marine station.

Watching Brief (8 January 2015 - 1 May 2015)
A programme of archaeological monitoring was carried out intermittently from the 8th January 2015 to the 1st May 2015 on behalf of Portakabin Scotland in support of the construction works at the Millport Marine Research Station, Great Cumbrae, North Ayrshire (13/00729/PPP). No significant archaeological deposits or features were discovered during the monitoring of the ground breaking works at the Millport Marine Research Station.
