Archaeology Notes

(NO 1887 6757) Crandart on Site of Crandart (NR)

OS 6" map, Perthshire, 2nd ed. (1902)

In 1660 John McComie erected a fortalice at Crandart. The chimney lintel bears the date "1660", and the initials of the founder and his wife, also an inscription.

On another stone, taken from Crandart and built into nearby Balharry, is the same date and inscription.

A Jervise 1861; A J Warden 1882; D Grewar 1926.

No part of the 17th century house remains. The stone bearing the date "1660" is in a lintel of an outbuilding, while some windows are built with the moulded lintels and jambs of early windows.

Visited by OS (JLD) 24 September 1958.

As described, except that the datestone was moved by the Earl of Airlie a few years ago and is now at Airlie Castle. (Miss Duncan, Crandart)

Visited by OS (WDJ), 23 April 1968.
