Archaeology Notes

NS57NE 61.16 5634 7514

This site is depicted on the Ordnance Survey, 6-inch map, Dunbartonshire, 1918 sheet. Now heavily overgrown with bracken and gorse, the masonry surround halfway up the Criagmaddie reservoir (NS57NE 61.00) embankment suggests this may have been a natural source which was diverted when the embankment was created. The flow from the well almost instantly disappears into a pipe, which may possibly lead to the shaft depicted at NS 56352 75072 (Muylle Id=549).

Infomation from Jelle Muylle, engineer carrying out survey of sites and structures of the Glasgow Corporation Loch Katrine Waterworks scheme for RCAHMS, Historic Scotland funded, December 2007.
