The main firing range used by the City of Edinburgh and Midlothian Rifle Association, was situated between the Hermitage of Braid House (NT27SE 351) and a house annotated as Rubislaw (1st edition 25-inch (Edinburghshire, 1896), now demolished and the site presently occupied by 79 Braid Avenue and 31 Hermitage Drive.
It was probably a temporary range set up each year for the annual meetings. The targets were set high on Blackford Hill, the two hundred yard targets were just below the park wall between the trees and the steep hill down to Hermitage of Braid (Meldrum 2007).
Two ranges, one of 600yds (from NT 24797 70329 to the markers and targets at NT 25298 70564) and 200yds (from NT 25195 70396 to the markets and targets at NT 25360 70470) are depicted on the 25-inch (ibid). None of the subsequent editions of the 25-inch Edinburghshire maps show the ranges.
