Activities

Field Visit (23 June 1988)

NO15NE 44 1678 5841

Situated at the rear of a narrow W-facing terrace at the head of the valley of the Drumturn Burn, there are the remains of a building which measures 24m in length by 4.5m in width at the NNE end and 8m in width at the SSW end and over a stony bank about 1.5m thick and 0.5m in height. In contrast with the square N end, the S end is rounded and at this end the interior has been levelled into the slope. The entrance is situated on the W side and on the E, uphill, side there is a drainage hood/gully.

A second building lies 16.5m to the SW and measures 12m WNW-ESE by 6.6m over a stony bank up to 1.3m thick and partially faced inside and out with boulders. The W end is slightly wider than the E, and the centrally-placed entrance lies on the N side. An enclosure measuring about 20m E-W by 12m at the W end and 9m at the E end internally is situated a few metres NW of the long building. There is no apparent entrance to the enclosure but there is an outer boulder face to the bank (up to 2m thick) and on the N, E and S there is an external ditch which measures up to about 1.5m in breadth but is very shallow.

Visited by RCAHMS (SPH/JRS) 23 June 1988.

RCAHMS 1990

Measured Survey (23 June 1988)

RCAHMS surveyed the Pitcarmick-type building at Knockali (NO 1678 5841) on 23 June 1988 with self-reducing alidade and plane-table at a scale of 1:250. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a scale of 1:500 (RCAHMS 1990, Fig. 288.5).

Field Visit (25 November 2015)

Alder Archaeology was commissioned by John Clegg & Co, Chartered Surveyors and Forestry Agents to undertake a desk-based assessment and walkover survey on the site of a proposed forestry development at Drumfork, Blacklunans, near Blairgowrie, Perth and Kinross. The walkover (Alder site code (BW09) was done on 25 November 2015 in mainly dry, windy weather condition. The site had previously been surveyed by the RCAHMS in 1987-8 and only one additional site was recorded: a short stretch of drystone wall beside a rock outcrop, possibly part of a shelter.

Information from David Perry (Alder Archaeology Ltd).
