Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

Stone type: sandstone

Place of discovery: NH c 8781 7714

Present location: in situ on rock outcrop near south end of Jessie Port.

Evidence for discovery: found in 1984 and thought then to be modern. Now recognised as probably early medieval.

Present condition: some wear but good overall.

Description

Incised on the bedrock is a horse’s head facing right, with forelock, nostril and mouth. The style and carving technique resembles closely the Pictish symbol known as the beast’s head.

Date: probably early medieval.
