Archaeology Notes

NH86NW 20 8040 6898

Quarry c. 30m deep and 30m wide with a concrete tunnel at base. Tunnel seems short and quarried area is water filled. No obvious use for this. Quarried waste is tipped on to beach and is actively eroding. Large drilled blocks of sandstone and small rubble.

Possibly connected with WWII battery (NH86NW 10) above but may be more modern.

CFA/MORA Coastal Assessment Survey 1998.

Activities

Field Visit (30 March 2019)

This water-filled excavation was made by the Cromarty Petroleum Company for an underground oil storage facility in 1978, which was planned alongside the prospective construction of an oil refinery. The access tunnel at the N end is also flooded.

The workings are shown on aerial photographs (FSL/7819/01/0952-3) flown on 5 August 1978, which were taken soon after the project was stopped.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK, KLG), 30 March 2019.
