Archaeology Notes

NS92NW 54 9191 2529

NS 9191 2529 As part of Environmental Impact Assessment, archaeological investigative works were carried out for Dalgleish Associates Ltd in respect to the proposed hard rock quarry at Duneaton, Abington, South Lanarkshire. During the works no significant upstanding archaeology was identified on the site, although there are a number of significant archaeological sites in the area.

Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (6 May 2008 - 14 May 2008)

A programme of archaeological investigative works was undertaken in respect of the proposed quarry on land at Duneaton Quarry, Abington, South Lanarkshire (NGR: NS 9192 2524). An evaluation was carried out from the 6th to the 14th May 2008. The evaluation comprised of thirty three

trenches located within the footprint of the proposed quarry development.

Five negative features of potential archaeological significance were recorded during in the course of the evaluation. These comprised a small pit [015], a stakehole [021] and three postholes [017], [023] & [025]. Prehistoric pottery identified as Groove Ware was recovered from pit [015], suggesting a Neolithic date from this small complex of features.

Rathmell Archaeology has identified issues that will need to be addressed by the development and outlined a mitigation strategy that may be developed within the context of specific development proposals. These encompass anarchaeologically-led strip, map and sample, postexcavation analysis and reporting.

Archaeological Evaluation (25 January 2016 - 27 January 2016)

A programme of archaeological mitigation works was required by Dalgleish Associates on behalf of Hodge Plant Ltd. in support of consented works at Duneaton Quarry, Abington, South Lanarkshire. The mitigation required the stripping by machine of a large archaeologically sensitive area within the quarry. A previous evaluation in 2008 identified a pit, three postholes and a stakehole. Two pottery sherds recovered from the pit dated the features to the prehistoric period. The monitoring of the new area identified another pit similar in morphology and fill to the one identified in the evaluation phase. The features may represent the ploughed out remains of a prehistoric structure or settlement. No other significant features or artefacts were identified within the monitored area.

Archaeological Evaluation (20 July 2022 - 21 July 2022)

NS 92079 25078 Archaeological investigative works were carried out on behalf of Hodge Plant Ltd in respect of the forthcoming development at Duneaton Quarry Extension, Abington. The archaeological works were designed to determine the archaeological potential of the development area and hence inform the specification for mitigation of the impact on any archaeological remains. The works consisted of an intrusive sample of nine trenches and eight test pits excavated between the 20th and 21st of July 2022.The works identified a small number of modern plough scars and animal burrows relating to the agricultural nature of the development area.
