Archaeology Notes

NS95SE 74 960 544

NS 960 544 An archaeological evaluation and peat assessment was carried out in advance of an extension to Wilsontown Open Cast Coal Scheme. Several features associated with earlier coal mining were uncovered. These included parts of the Lawhead Branchline Mineral Railway and two possible mine shafts. A section of railway track recovered from the Lawhead Branchline suggests that it may have been a horse drawn plateway.

Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (April 2008)

NS 960 544 An evaluation was carried out in April 2008 in advance of an extension to Wilsontown Open Cast Coal Scheme. 21 trial trenches covering 2100m2 were excavated. One of the trenches recorded a section across the Lawhead Branchline Mineral Railway. The embankment was found to be 13m wide and survived to a height of 0.52m. It was laid directly onto the underlying peat and was made up of a dark grey, gritty, coal and ash-rich sand. No other features or deposits of archaeological significance were found.
