Aerial Photographic Interpretation (June 1992)

NO14SE 39 196 439.

The cropmark complex recorded by air photography at The Welton includes (besides NO14SE 29 and 35) both round and square barrows. Only one square barrow (measuring 8m across) can be identified with certainty, but there are two other possible examples. At least eight round barrows can also be distinguished. They range in diameter between 4m and 13m within their ditches, and each of them comprises a ring-ditch with a central pit (or, in one case, two).

In at least two instances, a round and a square barrow are set side-by-side, the grave-pits being aligned E-W. The two northernmost barrows are intersected by the ditch-system of the fort NO14SE 35, but the chronological relationship between these monuments is uncertain.

Visited by RCAHMS (AW, SH) June 1992.
