Archaeology Notes

ND37NW 8047 unlocated

NLO: Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

(Classified as Ferry: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as 5 October 1815). The Huna Ferry was lost in the Pentland Firth. Six lost. Registration: Scottish.

(Location cited as N58 40.0 W3 10.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary, being derived from the unverified location that is cited by Whittaker. The loss may have occurred within the area designated as Maritime - Orkney. Huna is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the Ness of Huna is at ND 363 738.

It remains unclear whether the vesel stranded: the former appears more probable.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 27 April 2007.
