Archaeology Notes

NN63NW 107 62316 37643.

This large rectangular sheepfold stands in rough grazing on the lower slopes of Leacann Ghlasa, about 100m NW of the modern Kiltyrie head-dyke. It measures 50m from NNW to SSE by 20m transversely over drystone rubble walls and it has been subdivided into one large compartment and seven small ones. It is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet lxix), and is likely to be the sheep fank built by the Breadalbane Estate on the common pasture of Kiltyrie in 1847-8 at a cost of £9 13s 4d (see RCAHMS MS 1155/6, p.221).
