Archaeology Notes

NH54NW 160 539 465

Series of almost enclosed ponds along the north coast of the tidal river Beauly before it opens into the estuary. The map shows 4 and perhaps 5 'ponds' of various sizes. All were full of water during our visit. Their surrounding banks were difficult to access but supported many reeds and undergrowth. They seemed in good condition. Presently full of patchy reed beds, they may have been estate or commercial reed beds in the past.

Levees of c 1.5m wide and between 0.5 - 1.0m above level of reed beds. Constructed of earth and small stones. Mostly good condition with just a few erosional damaged places.

Walking on the river bank mud the small levees are being seriously undermined along with the trees although no major breaks were seen. Entrance to reed beds c 7m wide and 2m deep, heavily silted with a deep narrow drainage in the silt.

Flood bank / reclamation; Beauly SSSI 37
