Archaeology Notes

NJ02SE 42 NJ 05562 20760.

The remains of this farmstead, which are situated within an extensive area of boggy moorland 870m WSW of Corriechullie, comprise a farmhouse with a U-plan range, its open side facing S, immediately to the N, and a corn-drying kiln a further 30m N. The farmhouse measures 12.9m from NNE to SSW by 5.4m transversely over walls that still stand to a height of 2m at the NNE end. There is a central doorway and flanking windows in the ESE side, and there are also windows in the WNW side. A fireplace at the NNE end is flanked on its E side by a cupboard recess. An outshot with an entrance in its ESE side is attached to the SSW end of the house.

The U-plan range is now ruinous:. The N wing has an entrance in both its N and S sides and the E wing contains two compartments, including a possible cart-shed. The W wing has been reduced to little more than footings. The kiln, which has been set into a gentle S-facing slope, measures 1.5m in internal diameter by at least 1.2m in depth, and the flue is on the S.

The farmstead is depicted roofed on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet xlviA), but by the end of the 19th century it had been abandoned and only the farmhouse and the N wing of the range are shown on the 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet xlviA), and they were unroofed at that time. The kiln is not depicted on either map.
