Section of North British Railway Company (NBR), Edinburgh to Hawick Branch Railway completed in 1847. The line forms a junction with the the NBR at Portobello and runs in a SSE direction to Millerhill. Further junctions are found at Niddrie North and Niddrie South and a large freight marshalling yard was built by British Railways in the late 1950s and early 1960s on both sides of the line at Millerhill.
After the Border Union Railway opened from Hawick to Carlisle in 1862, the line became known as The Waverley Line. Tracks are still extant as far as Millerhill and the City Bypass.
