Archaeology Notes

NH92NE 48 NH 98559 25898

This kilnbarn has been set into an E-facing slope immediately E of a plantation some 320m NNE of Balnuick farmsteading. Subrectangular on plan, it measures 10m from ESE to WNW by 4.1m overall. The rounded WNW end contains a drystone-faced kiln-pot, measuring about 2m in diameter by at least 1.5m in depth; the ESE end contains a rectangular compartment, the SE corner of which is overlain by a heap of field-cleared stones.

The kiln-barn is depicted unroofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874-5, sheet xxxiv), but it is not shown on the 2nd edition of the map (1903, sheet xxxiv).

Visited by RCAHMS (TIP, GB) 13 October 2006.
