Sir Basil Spence

Building Details

Basil Spence and Partners was commissioned in 1948 by ICI to design a transportable pavilion for use at agricultural shows. The pavilion was designed so it could be easily constructed and dismantled at each event. The pavilion was first used at the Royal Agricultural Show in July 1948.

Archive Details and Summary

The Sir Basil Spence Archive holds 17 photographs of the ICI Pavilion. These show that it was a two-storey structure with a lower floor open to the rear and containing panel displays mounted on columns. The display panels illustrated ICI’s agricultural products such as pesticides, fertilizers and veterinary treatments. The upper floor was used as a grandstand or viewing platform from which visitors could view the livestock events.
