Thurso, 23rd Mar. The FAIRY QUEEN (sloop), of Stornoway, completely loaded with oatmeal, canted over in the river this morning: her keel is broken, and the vessel is otherwise damaged: cargo landing in a damaged state.
Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 14,033, London, Saturday March 26 1859.
NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9672).
A location at ND c. 122 688 may be suggested for this stranding. The River Thurso (Thurso River) enters the SE corner of Thurso Bay through a well-defined mouth.
The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), possibly suggesting her successfukl recovery, although the statement that her 'keel [back] is broken' makes this appear unlikely.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 15 November 2006.
