Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 60 c. 11 23.

The Rev. James Beck...exhibited a Bronze Palstave ploughed up on a farm near Perth, in the autumn of 1877. On each face are punched or engraved ornaments composed of triangles in three rows; the edges are ornamented with diagonal grooves.

The present whereabouts of this palstave are unknown.

(Formerly recorded as NMRS NO12SW 158). A decorated Class I bronze flanged axe, found near Perth, is in the British Museum (WG.1815).

(Long-flanged axe of Balbirnie type). Single find, from the neighbourhood of Perth. Flanged axe, smooth, brown patina, one flange hammered down so as to obtain equal height for all, blade notched; length 103mm, butt 20mm, cutting edge 58mm, weight 184gms.

The axe formerly recorded as NO12SW 158 and held in the British Museum under accession number WG 1815 is to be identified with that discovered by Beck in 1877.
